27th June 1967 – First electronic ATM installed

The world’s first electronic automatic teller machine (ATM) was installed at Barclays Bank, Enfield Town, London on the 27th June 1967.

They make life easier and so they have become a pervasive.

I am fascinated by technology. At it’s best technology makes our lives healthier, richer and give us more leisure time. It is an extension of the tool making skills we have possessed since before our early origins as humans. Technology will eventually take us to the stars – if we are not so stupid that we use it to destroy ourselves.

Books read this year #13

26 June 2007

Book: 13
Title: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Author: J. K. Rowling
Why did you get this book? Bought ages ago. Book five in the Harry Potter series.
Do you like the cover? OK – Grown up version of the cover – sticks out amongst the others in my HP series.
Did you enjoy the book? OK. Not my favorite though.
Was the author new to you and would you read something by this author again? Not new at all. This is my third (or more) reading. I plan to read all the Harry Potter books ready for the release of the seventh and last book (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) on the 21st July 2007.
Are you keeping it or passing it on? Are you mad? I am keeping it.
Anything else? Getting darker as the series progresses. Harry at fifteen is frustratingly petty, obstinate and refuses to listen to advice.

Staring at the Sun is dangerous

25 June 2007

Let’s make this perfectly clear.
Staring at the Sun is not devout; it is stupid.
A loving God would not want you to willfully damage your eyesight on His account.

Most significant events in human history – version 2.

24 June 2007

Version 2.

I consider science and technology to be more significant to us than anything else. Also I was raised by a western culture so my viewpoint is Euro-centric. Make your own list if you disagree.

That last point is the scary one on the list. We should be talking about how to tackle it.

What’s the difference between a sceptic and a religious fundamentalist?
The sceptic believes only what he sees.
The religious fundamentalist sees only what he believes.

Lije Baley is sent from Earth to Solaris where robots outnumber people 20 000 to 1. He has to solve a murder mystery. To do that he has to overcome his fears and prejudices and understand a culture he is totaly unfamiliar with.
