Mercury – Messenger latest pictures

UPDATE: See my post on MESSENGERs second flyby.

Some amazing images of Mercury taken during the Messenger flyby last Monday (14th January 2008).

This is only the second space vehicle to visit Mercury. Last time was over 30 years age in 1974 and 1975 by Mariner 10.

The images under are from the Messenger web site.

Notice the double walled crater.

Mercury is completely covered in craters. Any new craters will erase older craters leaving the crater density unchanged.

The ray pattern from the bright crater in the top left is a familiar sight. The Moon has similar rays. They are caused by the ejection of matter from an impact crater.

Credit for these wonderful images belongs to NASA/Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory/Carnegie Institution of Washington.

  3. Greetings, There’s no doubt that your blog could be having browser compatibility problems. When I take a look at your site in Safari, it looks fine however when opening in I.E., it has some overlapping issues. I merely wanted to provide you with a quick heads up! Other than that, great blog!

  4. Wow that was strange. I just wrote an incredibly long comment but after I
clicked submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not
writing all that over again. Regardless, just wanted to say wonderful
